Monasterevin residents want the controversial mass concrete footpaths, laid by the council without warning, to be removed as soon as possible.
That was the message conveyed by Cllr. Suzanne Doyle at the Kildare Area Committee meeting last Wednesday February 15.
She stressed the paths are posing problems for traffic accessing the junction of Whelan Street and Main Street, as well as pedestrians.
Cllr Doyle acknowledged officials had met with the residents and had undertaken to prepare a review for the March meeting.
However, she demanded the concrete be removed as part of the promised review, and if this did not happen, she said she would take the matter to the full council.
Up to 15 people from the town attended the meeting and clapped from the public gallery in support of Cllr. Doyle’s motion.
Speaking afterwards, Monasterevin Residents Committee chairperson, Caroline Curran said; “I thought the it went well and the council know the people of Monasterevin mean business and we are not going to put up with what has been foisted on us, where they put it and the state of it, you wouldn’t have this kind of thing in Naas or Newbridge.”
Earlier Cllr. Doyle told officials the residents were totally supportive of ensuring paths were accessible and that there was a safe pedestrian crossing but this was not the answer.
“The means in which this happened is not acceptable in that there was lack of consultation. I know the end of the year was coming up and the budgets had to be sorted but this is not acceptable,” she said.
She said it was “incredulous” the residents were informed at the previous meeting that it was acceptable for HGVs to go onto the other side of the road when rounding the corner. Cllr. Tony O’Donnell said this would pose a health and safety issue and surely that would be of concern to the local gardai.
Cllr. Frances Browne, Cllr Paddy Kennedy and Cllr, Spike Nolan all backed Cllr. Doyle’s call for the paths to be taken up.
The Kildare Area Engineer, Damien McNulty said the meeting with the residents had been held in good faith and that a review had been promised. He said if you ask any HGV driver, they often have to cross onto the other side of the road when turning bends in urban areas. He also said people had been parking up very close to the junction prior to the paths going down.
“We will take all the issues fully on board and a report is being prepared,” he said.
Cllr. Doyle explained that when the group came back from the meeting with officials, and informed the rest of the committee what was discussed, they were not happy with the outcome. Cllr. Doyle said she wanted the heritage value of the town to be assessed as well as health and safety issues. She said Monasterevin was known as the Venice of Ireland and this area was Monasterevin’s Merrion Row.
The area engineer said any action would have to wait until the review was complete as such remedial work may have to be revisited.

By Noel O’Driscoll CROWDS turned out in Monasterevin last week at a public meeting to discuss the controversial roadworks in the town. A protest the previous weekend had also drawn a large crowd. But such was the crowd that turned out for the public meeting that it had to be moved from the day care centre to the nearby secondary school. The council put concrete build-outs on three sides of the junction at Main Street and Whelan Street. Local residents say this is dangerous because lorry drivers now have to mount the footpath to turn the corner. They also say that some cars have been damaged because of people driving over them. Sarah O’Neill is PRO for Monasterevin Community Council. “There was a huge turnout because this is something which has really annoyed many people in the town. Several of the councillors came including councillors Browne, Nolan, Doyle and O’Donnell, as well as local TD Sean Ó Feargháil.” Ms O’Neill said that the local politicians had a number of suggestions for the committee. “They advised us to get in touch with local gardaí immediately and we did this the following morning. The gardaí told us they were putting up signs in the area because they were worried about the safety of the concrete build-outs. We were also told to contact the Kildare Co Council Director of Transportation and Public Safety Michael O’Leary. We expect to have a meeting with him within the next week once he has familiarised himself with the issue.” Ms O’Neill went on to add that since the meeting Kildare Co Council has itself put markers on the concrete areas to warn people of the safety dangers. However she said that this is not enough and they want the concrete removed. “We were also told to put a motion before the next council meeting to have the concrete removed. The signs are permanent markers, which have been put in place for health and safety reasons. However we want the concrete areas removed for other reasons apart from health and safety. Monasterevin is a heritage town and the wide street in Monasterevin is part of our heritage. “If we don’t have that heritage then people wont be attracted to our town.”
Ms O’Neill said that more meetings would be organised in the near future. “We will have another meeting shortly to update people on what is happening with this issue. Also other issues have been raised at the meetings that we have had and we plan to address the issues that local people have with the town

Monk welcome on board, it's great to have people joining in on here rather than people just looking. Register and throw in your tuppence worth, whether its positive or negative, its all welcome. On the committee formed to protest the concrete paths, they do hope to extend the remit to take on lots of concerns of the people from the town. They don't want only to be a single issue committe. It would be nice to start with a victory or positive outcome from ths first battle though.

www.kfmradio.com/kfm-radio/local-news/kcc-stands-over-monasterevin-access-works.htmlSeems like that's the end of that, and by the looks of the end of the well meaning Monasterevin Community Council who i must say have gone very quiet.... People might think twice about giving applaud to the rubbish that comes out of our representatives months the next time.Like them all they just say what people want to hear and then crawl back under the rocks they came from. The voice of the people....what a laugh.

Tumb we have been quiet because we have been waiting on word from the council. There is no point in having meetings if we don't have new information. We do now have a 14 page response from Kildare CC, Western Area Office. The gist of the report is that the will make minor adjustments to the radii of the turn, on the CYMS and Paul Cullens corner side. They will not make any adjustments to the size of the concrete on the garden side.
As far as we are concerned we reject the reply and are pushing on to raise this at the next full council meeting. We are also working with an expert on this, who is preparing a report to refute the council case.
I would love for people to see the report but don't have the time to type 14 pages. People on the committee are taking time off work and going to Naas, repetedly to make this case on behalf of the people of the town. To criticse and say we have been very quiet is not very encouraging.
More info,
We will see if we can get a copy of the reply into the library for people to see for themselves.

Thanks for the reply ros,i was not trying to belittle the M.C.C its just it would be nice to be kept a little more informed on the progress,i know the people behind this are putting the time and effort in, and i did not intend to critical of the on going work you are doing.I am more pissed off at the effort of the county counselors that were at the meeting.Would like to see the report,so let us know when it is in the library.

It would be easy enough for someone to scan the report and save as a pdf and post it up.
