Hope you got on ok at the doc sugar and that you didn't have to fork out too much money.. my son got a filling today and it cost €110.. I think it's a disgrace, the cost of dentistry seems to be rising in this country, but wages are falling, there's something wrong somewhere! 110 for a filling well my lord mad or what was it gold they used , yes thanks loc got on ok just another 150 to the doc for 15 mins as usual but i did sleep well knowing my doc can drive his big posh car for another day he charges 150 every 15 mins now thats a job well paid, and then to top it off two euro for car parking charges , i tell you i coming back as a doc they print the cash theses days and yes their fees not going down are they...

I've never done it but I would love to have the neck. My husband goes to a lovely doctor in the Beacon clinic, about four or five times a year. He has an ongoing ear problem. She only charges him about twice. If all is ok, she will say, go on, you're fine I won't charge you for being well. She is a rarity among doctors these days!!

As Sugarlove said €150 for 15 minutes. It seems to be the norm with with specialists and can be for 5 or 10 minutes. Do they really need all that money? Many of them will lose it in dodgy investments or will it to their children.

there must be a service warranted as there are enough patients to go around all the private consultants... its a personal choice... either you go private or public.....
we have a two tiered health service Private and Public... the choice is yours... for better or worse.... we are stuck with it....

It is needed, but the cost of it isn't. It would be a good thing if the prices were a little more realistic.

well the way i see it is the public system is so bad that sometimes people who dont have insurance got no choice but to pay or wait weeks and months for to be seen by theses docs, but hey i have done price checks recently for a MRI and to my horror they charge what they like i got quotes from e390 to 680 now thats crazy and the one i went with did it the following day no thats mad and may i add it was a public hospital that did it. now can there be a waiting list in the public clinic of months and they can do it in the same public hospital the day after i call them and say i will pay cash........... crazy. but hey i am lucky as got a brill GP. and joe how do know that some people would see the doc and forget to bring the payment did you try it come on do tell.............

that comment was from me sugarloves.... yes i sometimes fill in and work with the consultant in the Private Rooms and it happens at every clinic at least one or two people.....
and you are right it pays to shop around when you are having a test like MRI, scan etc and decide to go privately.....both financially and in waiting time..... if you are having a chest x-ray st james's have a walk in service and you will get it there and then, probably have to wait about 20mins.... not bad.... and its free....

That's really good April, I didn't realise that. If I needed one I would have gone to Clane and paid through the nose for it. How come it's free?

that service was always there localy... once you had a gp letter you can just walk in... Monday/Wednesday/Friday 9-5pm.... also if you needed an x=ray for a trauma eg a wrist injury, leg injury etc and your gp gave you a letter you can walk in on these days also..... and have it done there and then. I would never pay for a general x-ray... as these are all free.....

That's great to know. I've had a letter from my GP for various x-rays, esp on my neck/cervical spine and he's always recommended I go to Clane!! he must have shares in the place.

you would be surprised localy... they are all in this together!!!!.... the problem with private hospitals are that they are not regulated. I know a man who hurt his leg when he slipped in the snow. He went to a private hospital for an x-ray... they couldn't find anything on the x-ray so went on to do an MRI, found a very slight hairline fracture. They took him in for "rest" and a few "tests".... found a "slight" heart murmur and then went on to do a battery of tests.... the poor man... there was nothing really wrong with him in the first place. He is home now and is fine but has just received an enormous bill, for the accommodation and all the tests....... luckily he has health insurance but it won't cover it all. Talk about being taken for a ride....... and that's the second case i personally know of this kind of thing happening.... No wonder the health insurance premiums are going up...... something should be done about this!!!!....

a cheers april i was told that about x ray dept in james a long time ago my doc is a brill at info locally, also they will do blood tests in peamount hospital in the mornings mon to thurs 9.00 untill 12.00 this saves me going into james which is a great help. but they wont send them on to the mater so have to go there sometimes, yes i was aware that some docs run tests for a laugh i think while they got you in as most are paid for by the insurance , recently i was in for a day case injection and i as a selfpaying patient was told dont turn up without payment for the hospital or i be sent home, they needed two cheques one for hops and one for doc and as i had been in another hospital for something else recently i had to have a MRSA swab and to pay for it, i had allready been told i got no MRSA but they said a no mrs we need to do it again i think it was just another way to get e 56 euro out of me . you need to be up early in the morning as the granny would say to catch me, we work so hard for our cash we should spend it wisely. i just clicked on to vhi i would have to wait five years to make a claim now i think the waiting period is way to long but they all the same.... five years i ask you sure that would give you a heart attack waiting for the time to come so you could claim. crazy...

i agree sugarloves... it is a disgrace the way these private hospital are allowed to carry on.... the really should be "regulated"... i cannot understand why they are not.... you would think the insurance companies would be happy to have them regulated as they would have less to pay out... so the mind boggles... i think it is all a conspiracy between themselves....
i think it is 5 years to make a claim if you have an existing complaint but less than a year after you join to make any other claim....... well that was what i was recently told when i rang them up on behalf of a patient who had a long term illness....
