april you never get the advertised speed. If you drop to 1mb it will be very slow especially if it is with eircom. I use BT and it is mega fast.

eff80, i am with eircom.
Do you mind me asking if you have 1mb or 3mb with BT and what speed are you getting?

I'm also with BT and the speed is fantastic. Another thing I did was bought extra memory and got a new 60gb HDD which really helps the speed!

is the the provider that would dictate the speed or is it the area you are in?

Speed is dictated by two things, what you have paid for (tariff) generally is the ideal and very rarely realised. Contention is the big issue. How many other people are you sharing the device (call it a modem) in the local exchange. On some tariffs its 1 to 12 people sharing but mostly it is 1 to 24 sharing. The lower the number you are sharing (in contention) with the faster the speeds. Thats why at peak times it gets slower. BT probably have less customers so less contention and theefore faster speeds.
There, I have confused myself after all of that....

It all makes perfect sense ros. But what bugs me is that Eircom charge so much for their broadband and don't deliver what they promise and what can we do about it. We need the broadband and I have had more phone companies in 3 years than I could count now, I think I had 3 in one year alone. thank goodness you don't have to sign contracts with most of them.

what happens if you want to change provider? Do you have to give the box back? how do you organise it?

once you have the box for a length of time you don't have to send it back. I never have anyway.!
