April, look in the tidy towns website, and the pictures are the visit from Westport Tidy Towns. The photo of the (pretend) Bower is way down in the 50s, as in photo number 51 and 52, 53 etc.. A group of people are sitting in it, one of the photos has our Joe in it!! Oakley Park is the big house in the grounds of St Raphaels, as Joe already said, it would be roughly behind the Grotto, go in the main gates of St Raphaels (not the estate) and in to the right and straight down you'll see the house.

Do you see the difference between that photo and the one on the tidy towns website. That one is as I described, under the ground level with steps directly in front leading down to the water, the one on the tidy towns website is above ground level with nothing in front or behind to show it is looking down on the river!! As I said before we gained access from the Abbey Hall, but if you go on up the road, past the Grove, and there is a bungelow on the right, it wouldn't be too far behind that bungalow.

'Vanessa' was the lover of Jonathan Swift, her real name was Esther Van Homrigh (sp), she lived in the Abbey, obviously before it was the Abbey.. She used to sit in the bower (the little stone seat in the photo) and write him letters and read his.. Think she died of a broken heart because he was essentially a bollocks.. There is a photo of St Wolstans, where I went to school., it's only down the road from my house.. april I will have to bring you on a tour of the area, you're going to tell me now you've never seen the Obelisk or The Wonderful Barn!! See some more recent photos of the bower at www.celbridgetidytowns.com. We took some shots of it with Westport Tidy Towns and Celbridge Tidy Towns people in it during the recent Westport Tidy Towns visit to Celbridge. Westalbany can find loads of photos of Celbridge at the same site. Thanks JP. Those buildings have some fine looking stonework. I'll read the pamphlet tomorrow when I get up. It's been a long weekend at the lake.

Apologies for April, she can't find her way on earth and has to go beyond and discover new places to get lost.
You must tell us more about "The Lake" in another thread or maybe "The Lake" is just another term for "The Soup"

The lake that I was talking about was a real one with land all around it. It's called Otisco Lake, it's in New York below Syracuse, and it's the easternmost of the 'Finger Lakes'. My brother has a cabin there.
