Go over the bridge and turn immediate right, go up past the Grove, follow that road until you come to a bad corner, go round the corner and you are on the road to Ardclough, you will pass approx 3 houses on the left, then take the turn to the left, go along this road and over the bridge (Kearneystown Bridge) it's either the first or second entrance on the right in to Lyons village and restaurant etc.

April, if you're successful in your "Search Quests", maybe you could post a picture for those of us who have never seen your fair town.

'Vanessa' was the lover of Jonathan Swift, her real name was Esther Van Homrigh (sp), she lived in the Abbey, obviously before it was the Abbey.. She used to sit in the bower (the little stone seat in the photo) and write him letters and read his.. Think she died of a broken heart because he was essentially a bollocks.. There is a photo of St Wolstans, where I went to school., it's only down the road from my house.. april I will have to bring you on a tour of the area, you're going to tell me now you've never seen the Obelisk or The Wonderful Barn!! See some more recent photos of the bower at www.celbridgetidytowns.com. We took some shots of it with Westport Tidy Towns and Celbridge Tidy Towns people in it during the recent Westport Tidy Towns visit to Celbridge. Westalbany can find loads of photos of Celbridge at the same site.

Have to question you about the Bower Joe, were there steps directly down in front of it right to the waters edge? The original Bower is on the opposite side of the river to the Abbey.

Don't think so! you'll have to go in and look for yourself, just bring a few cans and hop the wall and nobody will mind.

Well as I said before I swam there as a youngster, and we would leave our clothes and towels on the stone seat.. We got in over the wall at the Abbey Hall and walked straight up until we came to a grassy mound, we would then be standing on top of the bower, to the left side there were stone steps down and into the Bower and just in front, more steps down to the river, it was very secluded and quiet, til we arrived!!!

hmmm, that's the other side of the river from where we were. There's more than one bower so, and older one and a newer one.

I remember being in the Abbey grounds one time and someone pointed out the Bower, and I knew then that someone sometime built a new bower on the Abbey side of the river, but there was a gated bridge over the river and you could get to the original bower that way from the Abbey.... someone is cheating Joe! Lovely photos by the way
