I like the sound of this, what kind of camera did you get forester?I got my first DSLR at Christmas it was cannon and i got DLSR FOR dummies from Amazon which helped me a lot.regarding your problem i would say it might be your iso needs adjusting,as i said i only have my camera since xmas so maybe someone with a few more years experience might be able to give you some better advice...

i bought the fugifilm finepix s2750. it's excellent for what i want to do. all i take picture's of is building's and landscape's. however as i am not a brainy kind of guy. it has a lot more feature's than i know how to use but would really get to know and use them. i have ordered a book called photography for dummy's, lets hope it help's, any idea on book's yourself. thanks for your quick reply vector, does the iso need to go up or down. let,s hope this site take's off well. i mean everybody has a camera and use's it at some stage.

Hi Forrester. Great to hear you are getting into photography. I'm an experienced photographer so i may be of assistance. First of all if you want to use your camera outside of manual mode you will need to learn to basics of exposure (how long the shutter is open!). ISO is a measure of the sensitivity to light of your sensor. The higher the iso the more sensitive the sensor is to light ie. it picks up more light. However, the quality reduces with higher ISO settings. I reckon the problem with your building/landscpae photos is actually to do with exposure and where your camera took it's measurements from. in very simple terms, if you point the camera at a building in shade the camera will think that it is quite dark out (because it is looking at a dark object) and it will open the shutter for a long time to get enough light from the building to make a decent shot. However the sky will then be completely over exposed. The opposite also happens. Camera points at sky (brightest thing around) and thinks it's very bright out so opens the shutter for a short amount of time and hey presto dark building. That's very much simplifying it. I recommend you go to a site called ephotozine. They have loads of tutorials and helpful forums and it's free. Look up tutorials on you tube, they have everything from absolute beginner to advanced stuff. The most important thing is to be patient, learn the basics and practice.

well now that you mention it, the photograph's i took that came out dark- i was standing beside a tall building aiming the camera at another building, so that would probably have effected the photo. and you could not have made it simpler. i am also wondering what book should i get that will help me with photography but explaining it to me as you did, ie- in simple term's.

Where books are concerned there is a dude called John Hedgecoe. He has written a bunch of books on photography. Check him out on amazon to see which one would suit your needs. He has one specific to digital but his original "basic book of photography" has been updated. If the original is anything to go by it should be excellent. I read the original and it got me hooked enough to go and get qualified!!!! Brilliantly explained with loads of examples. Happy learning!!!!!

got a book called- digital photography for dummies. so am going to start reading it soon, only problem is i have to have peace and quiet while reading otherwise i can't concentrate, so it look's like it's a bedtime book. hope there is no scary bit's in it. hah. any sign of anyone local starting up a photography class. if anyone is interested let your opinion be known in this section. we have two local lads that are very good photographers, and am sure they would help out. just a matter of being nice to them.
