There will be public meeting for all community groups in Monasterevin hosted by Kildare Leadership and Kildare county council. The theme of the meeting is to obtain a community facility for the town. The idea is to get as many ideas and what facilities the town needs.
The meeting is on Tue 3rd May 8 pm at St Pauls Secondary school in the gym. I urge all of who read this get in touch with anyone who is involved in any community group e.g resident associations, community games, church activities, voluntary charity organizations, sporting groups, and youth clubs, library, book clubs, parenting groups, addictions / counseling groups, and any other groups you can think of to attend this meeting

Wow! something historic happened tonight, almost 100 people attended the meeting tonight, facilitateded by Kildare Leadership and Kildare County Council. There were representatives of the Youth Club, Monasterevin Gospel Choir, Venice of Ireland, Recreation Centre Committee, CYMS/CWMS, Community Games, Housing Associations, individuals who have moved into the town in the last few years, all the schools, Irish Dancing and many, many more.
They began by indicating their role in the process, which was to bring togther the community, to understand the needs of the community and to put in place a plan to bring this together. They have the expertise and the experience having recently completed a projcect in Kildare Town.
The large attendance were broke up into smaller groups to focus on two key questions; Who and what needs to be accomodated in the community facility? What are the options regarding the location of the facility.
There were a lot of suggestions both for what was needed e.g. community creche, cafe, educational, drama and performance space, youth reach/club facilities, parent & toddler, meeting rooms, sporting facilities, indoor and outdoor and many other ideas.
There were a few locations mentioned, the site proposed for the recreation centre, in St Evins Park, the CYMS Hall, the old Ballykelly Football field, Moore Abbey and Mill Stream.
The next part was to accept nominations for the committee, again there were repsresentatives from, CYMS, Recreation commitee, Venice of Ireland, Housing associations, a person who has experience in an existing community centre. There was so much interest that they decided to defer the final nominations, and seek volunteers from various organisations in the town. The really want the group to reflect as many aspects of the town as possible. They may have to break the commitee into subgroups to accomodate the numbers that are interested.
When the committee is finally put together, they will meet regularly to establish the needs, and the potential locations. They will keep the people of the town informed by various means, including; newsletter, web site, forum, texts, facebook etc.
The whole emphasis is on a whole community involvement, with not such a focus on sport. There is funding available, up to Euro 500,000 but matching funding is required, either by means of a site, a property, also there is community raised funding required.
Thats all I can remember for now, if anyone else who was there can remember some of the stuff I have forgotten, please add to this post.
Sorry for the long post, its kind of a big thing, this is Monasterevin, nothing like this has happened in a long time. Lets hope that there will be a good committee, and they all pull together and can get this up and running with the cooperation of the people of the town.

Ros, Great reporting - that is what is needed for this group - good communications , it needs to be open and honest - great that new people to the town are interested in getting involved and the large turnout was very encouraging, Monasterevin has been a forgotten about town with lots of housing estates built in the last few years and very little facilities for the people that live here, good to see our newest TD and local councillor attending. We have great people in this town and if they work together we will have a wonderful facility to call our own Ros - if your not on the committee already would you put yourself forward as I think you have a desire to inform people of the town.

Reporting - that is what is needed for this group - good communications , it needs to be open and honest Slimy not necessarily interested in being on the committee, there are loads of people already interested. I do think they should keep us all informed of what is happening, good and bad, how else can they bring the whole community along with them. Too many organisations in the town have lost support because of not informing the people of the town of what was happening. I have been on a few committees like this as well. This is a huge opportunity for the town, we don't get too many chances down here in Monasterevin. Lets not blow it, keep people informed, bring them along with you. This project is going to need a lot of support, funding, voluntary work, cooperation, determination, stamina, public spirit and the good will of the people of the town, those that have been here for a hundred years, or 1.

Well done ros for the great update on this meeting. I was at it myself and felt there was alot of positivity there on the night, really hope the new committee get up and running quickly and communication to all atendees is good.
I am only living in Monasterevin for 5 years now - moved here from Newbridge. I definitely feel the town needs to bring together the new and old residents into a community facility to make people feel part of the town and get involved in various activities. Could be great for the town.
However, when I went home I was a little deflated. The idea that people have been working on the recreation centre for 10 years and now this comes along and really throws a spanner into their plans (possibly not). Their building is costed at 2m and the funding is only for 500k up to 75% of total value - so not viable for that. Also, they don't support sporting facilites - large part of original plan. They mentioned splitting this part out but not sure how this is possible (especially as Tennis group have 400k in cash to put in). I wonder is a revised recreation centre plan viable - seems to make this quite a complicated process now. Good luck to the new committee. I would like to help where I can.

I think people are getting the wrong end of the stick with the Recreation Committee. The building on the site is to allow for drama with stage and changing rooms, confrence room for meeting's,cafe was planed for the upstairs of the building which could be run for profit to help run the RC,a creche could be run during the day, bingo could be held at night time, the list is endless. So lets not look at the big picture for the moment if we could get the funding to get the building off the ground and the rest would follow. As the man said if we build it they will come.

Well in my own personal opinion would the recreation center not be for all of the people in Monasterevin, not one specific group, yes they have included basket ball court, football pitch, tennis courts in there plans but again this is I think for the whole community of Monasterevin. Maybe the Recreation Committee would be open to letting other groups come on board with them, time will tell, but one thing is for sure we all have to work together in Monasterevin because as I see it and again just my opinion Kildare County Council will do nothing for us unless we all work together.

Following up on matters arising from the public meeting hosted by County Kildare Leader Partnership and Kildare County Council, the M.R.C.C would like to inform the public that after nine years of work there is full planning permission in place for a facility on Togher Road in Monasterevin.
To give just a brief outline from the beginning the committee was formed in March 2002 to undertake providing facilities for Monasterevin and the surrounding areas. At a similar meeting to the meeting held on the 3rd of May last a committee made up of local people, new residants, teachers from different schools, principals and former principals, buisness people and retired buisness people, voluntary groups, Soccer club, Tennis club, Athletic club, Basketball club, Voluntary Housing Association, Drama society, and many different people from all walks of life were always welcome to particapate in the provision of facilites for all the people.
Working together along with all public representitives ie. TD's, County Councillers , Priests, GardaĆ, Schools and WSP Ireland, we were advised by all concerned to seek planning permission on Togher Road Monasterevin, and we were gauranteed their backing for this full project. The land showed to us by Kildare County Council's Leisure Services Department, was already zoned amenities, and we were advised of it's importance to achieve planning permission. After years of work and over 20,000 euros spent on planning permission, we now have full planning permission for a facility that would cater for the needs of everybody in Monasterevin and surrounding areas. Fire Certs and levies for this project are complete and everything is ready to go.
This project got an important endorsement by WSP Ireland with whom we spoke at length on all aspects. WSP Ireland was a group employed by KCC to look into the needs for Monasterevin over a 15 year period. This public meeting was held in the Hazel Hotel on Thursday 6th of March 2003and 55 local groups were invited to attend and give their views and opinions, much the same as the meeting on Tuesday night last. The main reasons WSP Ireland endorsed this project was the fact of the close proximity of the site to all the schools and the railway station and the fact that it was much needed for the town and was in a safe and secure environment.
RTE read of our concerns and contacted us to highlight our plight on a program called Pobal and we later included this DVD in our planning application. Nine years later and we are ready to proceed with the main work on the ground. The meeting on Tuesday 3rd of May was a great start to this to bring us to the next stage. By staying positive and working together as a community is the only way this project will be delivered. As RTE at the time televised our plight in 2003 and helped us stay positive and strong , we would see the public meeting hosted by County Kildare Leader Partnership and Kildare County Council as another plus at this stage in providing this much needed facility.
As one line of our Petition read when we handed into Kildare County Council back in 2003, "This project for Monasterevin is far greater than any one of us, so let's not make it a political issue at the expense of all concerned living in Monasterevin and the surrounding areas"

On another much needed facility in town the M.R.C.C worked in company with KCC in the delivery of this new playground and this is something we are proud of. Following numerous meetings at KCC offices since 2004 the playground would have not gone ahead without a site being identified at the time. Through the help of a local man, who was responsible for delivering the Riverside Park we were able to use the existing site with his permission and Waterways Ireland's approval.
The funds for this were secured by public representatives for 3 years before commencement of work. This came from levies paid by people to KCC for houses built in the county, but to have it ring- fenced for such a long time left things easier on the fundraising for the people of Monasterevin.
Keyholders are in place for opening and locking up each day. This followed a meeting with interested parties from different parts of the town at the opening of the playground last November 2010. MRCC will be renewing the roster in July for keyholders and anybody who wishes to be a keyholder is welcome to attend a meeting and put themselves forward. This meeting will be published in all local papers, newsletters and any form of public viewing as was done over the past nine years concerning the Recreation facility aswell. The offical opening of the playground has not being decided by KCC as of yet. When this happens everybody in Monasterevin will be informed well before the date.
Finally it is our intention to put the plans of the Recreation facility at Togher Road on public view at the old General Stores building in the Square in Monasterevin from the 10th of May 2011. This is being done so as everybody in the area can see for themselves what has being planned for the town as regards of Recreation facilities. LET US NOT FORGET THAT THE PETITION SIGNED
BY THE PEOPLE OF MONASTEREVIN IN FAVOUR OF THIS PROJECT WAS A WHOPPING 85% WHICH IS A MASSIVE ENDORSEMENT BY ANY ACCOUNT.
