Just passed what seems to have been a serious accident on the Clane to Celbridge road. Several cars pulled in, Gardai in attendance and someone getting CPR on the roadside. Seems to be a cyclist involved. Ambulance hadn't yet arrived - hope they are ok.

This road has to be the most dangerous in Ireland approx 8 people killed on this road since I moved to Celbridge in 1989.

That section of road is one of the chosen spots for the speed detection van but I have never spotted one along that stretch. It doesn't mean it hasn't been there but just that I haven't seen it.

Another stretch where there is supposed to be a speed van is on the R405 heading into Maynooth which is a road I use around 10 times a week and haven't seen a van there yet.

Joe I've seen a speed detection van - as you travel towards Clane after Barberstown Roundabout there is a large roadsign on the righthand side of the road (on a bend) the speed van is in the generally on the Celbridge/Barberstown side of that. I would travel that road generally on a Sunday.

Maybe they should move up and down the road a bit as there are other places on the way to Clane they could pull in. Regular users of the road get to know if they don't move around.

The speed van is very well placed - you are accelerating after passing Barberstown Castle suddenly you come across the speed van, it's too late then, you're already caught. Personally I find that the driving is crazy on that road i.e. the overtaking with oncoming traffic also 'the men in lycra' cycling 4 abreast on Sunday mornings

I often encounter the Sunday groups of cyclists and note how they can spread themselves out without giving the care they should. Every so often the Tidy Towns do a litter clean from Wolstans school to Ardrass along the narrow winding road which has much traffic. We put up signs at each end and have a person on flag duty about 50m ahead of the picking group. We keep fairly much to the edge of the road and don't stray out. What gets me is when such a group of cyclists come by they can be way out taking up their half of the road and not necessarily minding what traffic is coming behind. They don't seem to be careful enough along the blind bends and some cars can be travelling way too fast along the dangerous stretch. I'm not saying this was what happened with the latest accident but it is something the Sunday cyclists should be more aware of. With the longer evenings you get large groups of cyclists during the week as well.

Well I think most of these lycra clad cyclists are the most stupid and inconsiderate road users.. They do not observe the rules of the road, they do not stop at red lights, I was nearly run over by a guy last thursday evening at Youngs cross.. Lights are red, cars are all stopped, I've the little green man and as I started to cross this arsehole whizzes up on his bike, straight through the lights and nearly hit my little dog.. I shouted after him but he just continued on as if we weren't there.. and he was a man in his 50's I'd say, who should have more sense. The drivers pay the road tax and insurance, and don't get me started about them cycling in large groups.. since when did they decide they could take over the roads?? Not saying there are no bad car and van and lorry and bus drivers, there are, but they are not as vulnerable as the cyclists.. idiots.. Poor man that was killed yesterday, at that age, out keeping fit, and to end up like that.. RIP

A group of cyclists passed us on the Clane Rd last Tuesday but weren't the lycra type, some had baskets. I met one of them this evening and she was recovering from 7 stitches in her knee, some broken teeth and a burst lip. She hit a footpath kerb and did an over the handbars flight and it wasn't when she was waving at me.
