The thoughts of a chicken making its way across the world from Thailand is enough to make me feel ill. How come chickens need to be imported from so far away?

I'd say they are mass bred in huge numbers, in appalling conditions.. So they'd be cheap.

I made a new thread out of this one because it is something that not all people are aware of. Over 90% of chicken served in restaurants, chippers, delis etc. is not Irish. Chicken fillets in supermarkets are likely not Irish either. Irish chicken producers find it very difficult to compete especially when they have to meet the standards most imports don't have to. Check this link. www.chicken.ie/chicken-news/end-of-the-road-for-irish-chicken.724.html

i always check that the chicken is irish, and you get what you pay for these days. do check the wrap in the shops and ask the butcher, by law its to show its EEC number of the factory it comes from its trace is required, not saying which store but alot of the frozen stuff does come from thailand. have a look next time you in store.
