Can anyone recommend a nice restaurant in Midtown New York - anywhere around 34th Street?

Guys, I'd avoid Times Square like the plague, unless you want to hang out with the million other non-New Yorkers walking at a mile an hour looking upwards and taking photos of taxis. Likewise, chains like TGI, Olive Garden ("Italian" food mass produced by non-Italians for tourists) Sorry Chewchew!), Applebees, Pizza Uno etc, food is pretty standard, but you may as well be in any city in US, and if you're going to come all the way to NYC, why not sample something genuine, rather than a slight upgrade from Burger King? There are thousands of other restaurants around the city, I'd much rather support, instead of the ones owned by multi-national corporations. If you like Italian go to Mulberry Street (Little Italy), where it's so much more authentic, and your waiter might even be some old guy from Naples, rather than some Danish student working for the summer!

there's a nice irish place in that area if you fancy home-style food, called Tir na n'Og, it's near Madison Square Garden, 33rd and 7th, I've eaten there a few times, and it's pretty good. also, if you want a more detailed idea of what's in the area, go to citysearch.com, it gives reviews etc of most bars, restaurants and clubs in the city, pretty easy to navigate too. pm me though, if you need any info:)
