Anyone else having problems getting to web sites tonight?
I changed my eircom DNS settings from their recommended 213.94.190.194 & .236 to 159.134.237.6 and now things are fine. I changed back and the problems were back so I reverted to my temp DNS address.
If you are having problems you may not be able to hit this site so you won't see this post.

DNS stands for Domain Name System, it is responsible for converting names into IP addresses E.G. procboards.com is reachable via IP 67.15.247.140. On your browser you type in names for sites but the internet doesn't know how to get you places using names so it looks up a DNS for the IP address associated with the name and then uses the IP address to find the site. email also works by looking up IP addresses. There's a hierarchical system of DNSs out there and your computer would be talking to one at the bottom of the ladder and you would also have a backup to the main one.
The DNS settings are more than likely picked up automatically by your broadband box so you are stuck with them unless you login to the box and manually reconfigure the DNS entries and change them as I did.
