BT broadband is up to 8 mb and you share with a lot less people. Way, way faster than any eircom product.

As far as I can remember all default lines on eircom are 2mb, you won't notice much if any difference with an upgrade to a 3mb line. Even moreso if you're using wireless.
We had a 10mb line with Virgin Media until christmas, when I got back home to our 2mb line in Ireland I definitely noticed the difference. It was like going back to 56k dial up. Broadband in Ireland is awful compared to the rest of Europe.

As far as I know,I'm paying for a mere 1 meg to Eircom and this seemed perfectly adequate to me.The 3 meg thing barely makes a difference and, anyway,my life is not so busy that I can't wait a milli-second to view something.
I have been using a laptop a lot recently-wireless-and I cant understand why it is so slow,
And whats this about SHARING broadband

I have been using a laptop a lot recently-wireless-and I cant understand why it is so slow, And whats this about SHARING broadband Sharing broadband is the equivalent to sitting down to a meal and everyone sharing a common bowl of rice in the middle of the table. If you are sharing with 48 and all are hungry at the same time then your chances of getting a good helping are slim. If not many are hungry and just taking little nibbles then you have a better chance of pulling as much rice as your hands will hold and bowl can give you. The trouble is you can't choose the crowd you are sharing with, they could be a hungry bunch always pulling rice and hungry at the same time as you or they might be a nice mix with only a few hungry ones. In theory, The lower the contention ratio the better chance you have of getting rice but some providers might have a smaller bowl of rice so even though the contention ratio and up/down speeds may compare the same they can fall down in keeping the bowl full. I just made that up now but it'll do until someone comes up with a better story. Some E.G.s of contention:- Smart Telecom Contention Ratio - 1:1 Chorus NTL(UPC) Contention Ratio - 17:1 UTV Broadband Contention Ratio - 48:1 BT Broadband Contention Ratio - 48:1 Perlico Broadband Contention Ratio - 48:1 Eircom Broadband Contention Ratio - 48:1

I never knew any of that, but even I understand your analogy. So thats why its slower at some times. I always thought it was my computer acting up.
