This is my understanding of it. There was touting for an alternative Monasterevin forum on 'our' forum, promising a free for all, no censorship etc. The current admin considered that it was too similar to his / hers and decided it was too risky to take a chance. In the length of time it took him to close down the Monasterevinonline.com website and the forum (2 days) the alternative site had disappeared as well.
It was all too sudden, anyone who wasn't on there over the 2 days didn't know anything about it. As original posters know, we used be hosted on a Kildare County Council forum and it had a section for every town in the county and it worked brilliantly. It was moderated a little too strictly perhaps. They did give a good bit of warning of the closure though. Thats when Campbells stepped in and set up a forum for Celbridge. This was at the same time most Monasterevin moved across to the forum we have been using since. It had been there for a while albeit just being used mostly by the various GAA people.
In the meantime it had grown to over 140 members, a lot of them regulars and there was a lot of very engaging, interesting and lively threads, all of which have been lost again, which is a major pity.
I contacted campbells and at very short notice he has accomodated us, as have the posters from Celbridge. Some people seem interested in the idea of a broader forum that includes more than Monasterevin, some obviously don't and have made it clear. What we have is a place to at least discuss the alternatives, hopefuly in a reasonable way. There is a major revison of this site on the way in a couple of weeks and it would be interesting to see what that might look like.
Someone may go off and set up another one just for Monasterevin, I just hope they know what might be involved in though. Free for alls sound great, but if a site gets closed down again, we lose all the information one more time. Something stable sounds good to me.
I am a real forum junkie, I will probably follow the forum around where ever it goes. I am not prepared to set one up though, there are certain obligations and resposibilities attached to same. I am beginning to bore myseld now so its time to stop waffling.
Any suggestions are welcome, if for some reason people lose contact, if they e-mail me at monasterevin@kildare.ie I will try and keep them up to date on whats going on, as well as updating the news section and forum link on that website.
