www.irishrail.ie/media/Draft2013HeustonTimetable1.pdfLong promised hourly train service between Dublin and Portlaoise makes its first appearance in the new 2013 timetable. Above link is to a proposed draft only so lets see what they actually deliver. Post rush hour services to Dublin was the last major gap in timetable and if above draft timetable indicates reality, Monasterevin services will take a step forward. A good day for MRUG :-) Steve

Thanks for posting that darchangel.
I once commutted to Dublin city centre when I moved to Monasterevin about 6 years ago. I had to drive to Kildare station to get the train as it was impossible to commute with the almost non-existant service from the Monasterevin station. I subsequently changed jobs to west Dublin where I have to drive up each day. Now my main issue is when will they sort Newlands Cross out!!
Anyway, this now looks like an excellent service if this timetable becomes reality. I may not use it for commuting but I'd now consider using it for the odd journey to Dublin with family. I think this could now attacht more people to Monasterevin as a genuine place to commute to the city from.
I know you've been pushing this issue for a long time Steve so very well done.

One further thing that would be nice is a late train from Dublin to Portlaoise like at 1pm (to accomodate a few drinks in the city and still get home). Last train appears to be approx 10pm according to above but I'm sure that's an issue for all stops from Dublin.

Announcement from IE for Heuston-Kildare-Portlaoise train users
"Major changes on this route include:
- Portlaoise commuter service: commuters from Portlaoise, Portarlington and Monasterevin will see a major increase in frequency of services as a number of Dublin/Kildare services are extended to operate Dublin/Portlaoise. These are:
Portlaoise: currently 18 trains each way daily, will increase to 28 trains Dublin to Portlaoise, 30 trains Portlaoise to Dublin Portarlington: currently 19 trains from Dublin, 23 trains to Dublin; will increase to 30 trains from Dublin, 33 trains to Dublin Monasterevin: currently 10 trains from Dublin, 5 trains to Dublin, will increase to 18 each way"
;D
Safe to say I am feckin delighted for the town. Thanks to Claire and Brendan for all their work with MRUG in making the case for a decent service back 2007-2010. Hopefully, hopefully everyone who needs or wants to use a train service for commuting or one-off trips can now start using Monasterevin as their base rather than driving to Kildare. That has always been my hope and greatest frustration when I commuted regularly by train.
Alas, every silver lining has a wee cloud. There is still no Sunday service which I find unbelievable. Not a single train. So we still have some work to do. Plus the provision of a ticketing machine so a station master presence in not required just to board the train (absence of same on a Sunday is the reason there are no stopping trains).

Unfortunately the service between Hazelhatch / Heuston has seen a decrease in the service.

Why would frequency of trains between these two stops impact on our ability to go anywhere ?
From what I gather, Inter City trains will no longer stop @ non junction stations like Monasterevin and Hazlehatch so some of the existing time slots may disappear but the whole point of expanding the commuter service to an hourly, all-stops Portlaoise-Dublin loop is to provide more trains running to clock face times. What services did you use that are no longer available in the new timetable ?

For a start two commuter trains in the morning - gone, 8.33am scrapped, next train is 8.59am. 8.50am and 9.10am scrapped. In the evening 17.45pm and 18.05pm are scrapped. It is important that people get to work on time, many of us have Annual Tickets and renewed them on the basis of the old timetable, now the train times no longer suit. So much for Transport 21. I got the 8.06, this morning which ran late. I'm going to switch to an Annual Ticket for Dublin Bus, it's quicker and cheaper.

If you care to look at the timetable for today (which I assume you have done):
Dep Arr Stops Duration 06:41 07:35 0 0:54 Commuter
07:01 07:48 0 0:47 Commuter 07:22 08:05 0 0:43 Intercity 07:42 08:24 0 0:42 Intercity 08:26 09:23 0 0:57 Commuter -------------------> 8.26 instead of 8.33 ?? 09:26 10:24 0 0:58 Commuter --------------------> Next train is 9.26 not 8.59
We still have five Dublin bound service leaving before 8.30am + trains after 9.30 for non commuters (yes, they do exist). This section of timetable hasnt really changed. For a town of 3,000 people, thats a decent service level.
Home in the evenings
Dept Arr (Dub) (Mon) 16:25 16:56 0 0:31 Intercity Not reservable 16:30 17:13 1 0:43 Intercity, Commuter Not reservable 17:10 17:47 0 0:37 Intercity Not reservable 17:20 18:21 0 1:01 Commuter Not reservable 17:35 18:21 1 0:46 Intercity, Commuter Not reservable 18:30 19:03 0 0:33 Intercity Not reservable 18:35 19:20 1 0:45 Intercity, Commuter Not reservable 18:55 19:40 0 0:54 Commuter
4 direct and 3 indirect services in the space of 3.5 hrs.
I still dont get your hazelhatch-euston comment earlier. Are you referring to the Hazelhatch-Heuston timetable ? Did you change trains at Hazelhatch on the old timetable ??
Ive had to deal with a lot of negativity from people about this service and MRUG fought tooth and nail to bring those negative sentiments in front of Iarnrod Eireann to force some level of change. If you want to use the Bus , fire head, your perogative but please dont idly dismiss what is a much improved timetable overall (maybe not specifically for dublin commuters but they had already been taken care of in previous timetable upgrades - believe me the services were a lot worse than what we currently have).

With all due respect you do not sound like a commuter, you have a lot of time on your hands to examine the new timetable. I commute to and from Heuston, not Euston. I commute 5 days a week from Hazelhatch/ Celbridge. Well done on your efforts on behalf of your Community in Monasterevin. However I live in Celbridge, and I'm commenting from that perspective. We have lost trains (commuter) both in the morning and evening, althought the trains that I take are more or less the same, but journey times are longer. Other commuters are greatly affected : say, people who start at 9.30/10am, they used to get that 8.33am train from Celbridge. That's a big gap from 8.24am, until 8.58am. Actually, when you get your 18 trains in each direction from Monastererevin, you will have alot more trains than will be serving Celbridge, which has a population of almost 20,000 ;D

Why are you giving the details of the trains to and from Monasterevin to Grainne, she commutes from Celbridge and if she says they have lost services them I'm sure it's true.

I dont know Grainne. I dont know where she lives (well actually now I do as you just told me). I dont work for IE and I dont pretend to talk on behalf of anyone bar MRUG.
Grainne has sort of gone off topic here so perhaps you might address your comments to her. I specifically asked her about her reference to Hazelhatch-Heuston but she ignored it. And she never mentioned Celbridge.
This is a Monasterevin-focused thread on the Monasterevin section of this forum AND its aimed at people living & commuting from Monasterevin. Everyone is welcome to contribute but off topic trolling isnt welcome on any forum.
MRUG stands for Monasterevin Rail Users Group btw.

I strongly recommend you talk to Mark@IrishRail Users Forum if you have problems with your service level. I know the plan is to extend the Dart out to Hazelhatch in due course but I wouldnt hold my breath. It took us 2.5 years of lobbying with Marks help to get IE to even notice how crappy the service was at our station here in Monasterevin. As you probably know, the Kildare Route Project has been underway since 2007. Its completion last year means that services along the route between Portlaoise and Dublin will be more commuter/Dart/Luas like and less dependent on passing Inter City trains. Weve been waiting a long time to see this level of improvement but MRUG did work for it. FYI, I commuted from Monasterevin to Dublin from 1999-2006 when I moved to City West to work. I use the train for social journeys but I no longer commute by train. And no I dont have any time on my hands, just got up of my ass and did something for the town. Congratulations on having such a big population in Celbridge. Bet the trains are full though :-)
