Why is it that sometimes Windows updates install themselves, while other times they could be sitting there for a month unless I remember to check?

The ones that install themselves are usually quick important fixes. The others are optional i guess.
Microsoft are sneaky b*stards. Even if you have automatic updates off completely, some updates will be downloaded and installed without the system letting you know.

Is it not a good thing that these updated are installed authomatically?

For a regular PC user yes it is. But in my personal experience they are scourge. I have a lot of sensitive software and drivers on my pc that these updates can effect drastically. Sometimes its only minor glitches, other times things stop working completely and I have to do a system restore. It doesn't take long, but its a pain in the ass, so I have them disabled. I've also set up a firewall so that nothing can get in or out without my approval, which means I don't get that annoying yellow shield popping messages about updates in my face every 5mins. ALSO after it automatically installs stuff without telling you, it asks you do you want to restart now or later. You can pick later, but then the damn thing pops up again after 5mins with a countdown during which if i don't click "later" it'll restart automatically. This has the potential to ruin hours and days of work for me. For example when I'm rendering a 3D animation (usually takes hours/days for something decent) I can't stop and start it, so if an update is installed and then it retstarts the pc without me asking it to,(sins I'm not at the pc all the time that its rendering my animation) all that work is gone and I have to start it again. /RANT

On the contrary april,(though this belongs on my once magnificent music thread),the "artists"who have been deleted, should be paying me,or at least giving me free tickets for their next revival tour or at the very least a word of thanks would not go amiss, for reviving interest in their long forgotten, pathetic careers.
Instead they insist that my monument to incredibly exquisite good musical taste should be dismantled and shame on them for that
I hold no emnity towards locally for having to delete the deletes, indeed,I hope I do not embaress her by revealing that she shed many a bitter tear while simply doing her duty.
Indeed,I wish to thank her for,for recently correcting my spelling in an unrelated post.

The only revival tour for some of Mr Angry's favourite choices will be on foot of an order to exhume a raft of bodies and inject some life by some frankenstein method or the like.

Sorry Mr A, I just can't help it.. I try to ignore the faulty spellings, but the teacher in me is screaming for it to be corrected... No insults intended. I did indeed shed many a bitter tear, not just over the spellings but because I had to delete the deletes. I thought of all your hard work, bringing those people back from the obscure recesses of youtube. Well done, don't give up... Get yourself a new computer.
