Another shop closing in our town.. More than words. I will be very sorry to see it go.. I went in quite regularly and Tina who ran the shop and Eileen who worked there are two lovely ladies.. such a shame that it was packed this morning with people looking for a bargain, 50% off everything.. If they'd gone in there in the first place when they needed cards or little gifts, the shop wouldn't be closing..

Depends what you call dear. I wouldn't call an average of €2.50 for a nice card expensive by today's standards, I've looked in tesco and they would be the same price if not dearer..

My wife uses this shop on occasion and always likes it and the service. I think they won 1st prize for best St Patrick's window display in 2011.

Well, as I'm in town during the day I find that there is a better range and price to be had there, if your disposable income has been hit, you would 'be minding the pennies' as well. Value like 3 cards (decent) for €2, then you can spend more on the present. Shops closing is a sign of the times I'm afraid.

Such a shame, I liked that shop. With Tesco & Co. taking over small shops don't stand a chance.

Exactly, and if more people shop in the town they've made their home, then maybe, with a bit of luck we'll have a town left when this recession is over in 10 years time!!

Very difficult when you are working in town and the shops are closed when you arrive home - no jobs available in my field locally. Unfortunately I've got to work to make ends meet.

I think you seem to be of the opinion that you are the only one who has to work to make ends meet... Well my ends have met and passed each other.. I do understand that people have to go to work, but you don't spend 7 days a week, every week of the year working in Dublin.. On a saturday morning the amount of cars leaving Celbridge for other towns is frightening.. most likely the Liffey Valley or the city.. I know you can't buy a pair of shoes or a pair of jeans here, but at one time you could.. and I did.. there were some marvellous boutiques in the town, Leixlip had a great shoe shop, we even had a gorgeous Lingerie shop at one time....all gone now, because not enough people spend here... just a little helps... We have a shop, it's a speciality shop so it's not a busy shop, only I don't get a wage any more we'd be a closed shop..

Celbridge is certainly struggling during this recession. I was in Malahide on Friday night (at a 40th) and the whole village was hopping. There were loads of people around the village there are still lots of restaurant and bars and shops.
We were early for party so went into "Wrights Bar" and the buzz was fantastic at 2000. Went up to buy 2 glasses of white wine and the very helpful bar man advised you could buy a bottle for €15.00 which we did. (had a choice of 3 decent bottles). The wine came served in an Ice Bucket (very posh I thought). A DJ (who is there every week) came on at 1030 and had everyone up bopping along. We left at 1230 the village was still hopping when we arrived back in Celbridge it was like a ghost town with just 2 people in Macaris. I know Malahide is by the sea but on a Feb night it was all locals in there.
I cant get my head around how two such similar type villages (age profile of residents, distance from city etc) can be so different.
